What conditions can herbal medicine treat?
Many conditions can be supported or helped using herbs. If you’re in any doubt about whether herbal medicine can help you, feel free to call your local herbal practitioner to discuss your condition. They will be happy to help, and there is no obligation to book an appointment.
Who can take herbal medicine?
If you consult a qualified herbal practitioner who is aware of herb/drug/supplements/food interactions and contra-indications, the herbal preparation will be specifically formulated for you at the time of the consultation, taking these things into account alongside your case history and assessment from the consultation.
What happens in a consultation?
Your herbal practitioner will make a full assessment of you and your condition, and then prescribe a suitable herbal formulation for you. The herbal medicine may be in tincture (an extract of herbs made using alcohol), tea or capsule form, and may comprise one or many herbs. Each prescription is individual and made up entirely to suit your needs.
How long is a course of treatment?
This depends entirely on your condition, and how long-standing it is. You will need to discuss this with your herbal practitioner.
What is involved in a course of treatment?
Treatment from a URHP Herbal Practitioner is different from that which you may have experienced from a doctor: it is a two-way relationship, with input and energy from both sides, not merely a simple substitution of herbs for drugs. In this way, it is possible to identify and effectively treat the cause of your condition, rather than merely suppressing the symptoms.
How much will it cost?
This depends on the treatment given. All our practitioners will give you prices when you speak to them, and many have concessions for those in genuine need.
Do I need a diagnosis from my GP?
No, a GP’s diagnosis is not necessary, although may be helpful. Your herbal practitioner will make a full assessment of you at your initial appointment whether you come with or without a diagnosis. It is not necessary to be ‘ill’ to consult a herbal practitioner. Many people do so in order to support and maintain positive good health.
Can I take herbs alongside my GP’s prescription?
Yes, in most cases herbal medicine is safe to take alongside medication, but there are some herbs and drugs that should not be taken together, so it is vital you let your herbal practitioner precisely know what you are taking.
Do I need to tell my GP I am taking herbal medicine?
Yes. It is good practice to keep everyone fully informed, even if your GP is not trained in the use of herbal medicine.
